Week 6 of 9

Couch to 5K Week 6

Week 6 asks a fair question: you proved you can run 20 minutes straight last week — can you hold that and stretch it further? The answer this week is 25.

This week's three sessions

Session 1: Run 5 min → Walk 3 min → Run 8 min → Walk 3 min → Run 5 min.

Session 2: Run 10 min → Walk 3 min → Run 10 min.

Session 3: Run 25 minutes continuously. No walk breaks.

What it actually feels like

Session 1 is a slight step back in intensity from last week's toughest day — it's a recovery-shaped session, not a harder one, so use it to settle your pace before the two long continuous efforts later in the week.

How to approach week 6

Session 1 is a recovery-shaped session, so use it to settle your pace. In sessions 2 and 3 the pattern is clear: start slow, hold steady, and save anything extra for the last two minutes. For the 25-minute run, aim to run the second half slightly faster than the first rather than the other way round.

Common problems this week

Look after the basics

Drink water through the day, not just before the run. Leave a day between sessions, and consider a short walk on rest days to keep your legs loose.

If this week goes badly

Repeating a week is a normal part of Couch to 5K, not a failure. If you could not finish the sessions, or you finished them but felt wrecked for a day or two, do this week again before you move on. The plan is time-based, so nothing is lost by taking an extra week.

What comes next

Week 7 is three identical 25-minute runs. Go to week 7.

Session structure follows the NHS Couch to 5K plan. Updated 27 October 2026.

Run it as a mission instead of a stopwatch

Five extra minutes of continuous running doesn't sound like much until you're inside minute 21 with nothing left to distract you. Exhale Exhale extends the same mission arc from week 5 rather than starting a new one — the story treats this as "further into hostile territory," which is a more honest description of what your legs are actually doing.
